A Home For Little Pumpkin

Once upon a time there was a little toy-sized dog named Pumpkin who unexpectedly needed a new home. She was told she was supposed to go live with an elderly man named Donald because he was old and his other dog died. He really needed a new best friend to keep him company.

Pumpkin was on her way to meet him when she found out he decided he didn’t want her. She could hear the woman driving the car saying, “What? Now he doesn’t want her? He changed his mind? We are already in the car on our way there!”

Pumpkin was really sad when she found out Donald had changed his mind. Now she didn’t know who was going to be her new best friend or where she was going to live! “What’s going to happen to me,” Pumpkin wondered.

Hearing that Donald didn’t want her was hard for Pumpkin and made her so sad she cried. She laid down and hid her head under her paws and whined softly.

From what Pumpkin had overheard in the car, he wanted a little dog that was black, like his old dog Nicky who had died. Pumpkin is brown, almost red in color, with white areas on her head and legs.

Pumpkin wondered why the color of her fur mattered. She didn’t think it was fair that the man hadn’t even given her a chance. She was just as cute and sweet as any black dog!

Pumpkin ended up at this lady’s house named Wendy who had picked her up and was driving the car. “I can’t keep you, Pumpkin, I am allergic to dogs and you weren’t supposed to be here at all. What am I going to do with you?” This made Pumpkin hide under a blanket, she didn’t want to have to go live on the street or in a shelter.

When Pumpkin peaked her head out from underneath the blanket, she could hear Wendy talking on the phone again. “Cousin, do you want the dog? Donald is insisting on a black dog.” There was more talking, but Pumpkin couldn’t hear the rest.

Three days later Pumpkin was in the car again and headed to Michigan. Apparently the lady named “cousin” wanted to meet her before any decisions were made as to where Pumpkin should go.

When Pumpkin got to Michigan, Wendy carried her out of the car and handed her to the new lady. Pumpkin snuggled against her shoulder and gave her a kiss on the side of the cheek. Well, aren’t you a cutie, the lady whispered softly in Pumpkin’s ear.

The next thing Pumpkin knew, she had her own blanket and she was resting on a big recliner in the new lady’s house! She can stay here, cousin, the lady said.
